By the Way, What is Faith?
As I have proceeded through seventy-seven years doing just about everything there is to do, including going to war, I have had a backstop for my excesses, faith. Faith in God as the actual reality of this universe. In college I studied a lot of science and what was lacking in those courses was creation. The creation of this universe while science said the universe was the result of some explosion that happened so far back in time that we cannot understand how far back.
Having been to war I understand that an explosion results in chaos. Science has “chaos theory” which seeks to explain our universe and the way it is. Yet, they fail to understand the order of this universe that must be ordered for life on this planet to exist. Not only exist but to exist in the abundance that we see. Earth is not an accident of chaos or we would not exist. Fragility is our planet and the fact that Earth is the only planet we know of with sustained life is rather miraculous. We know of no other planet that has life much less one that has thinking life that can understand faith. Humans are the only animals on this planet that can believe in God or can write the bible.
It is with much study and a lot of doubt, from time to time that I have come to have faith in God. The above paragraphs are only a brief summary of my bouts with science and my understanding of the bible. The two do not mesh as nicely as they should and that was a discovery that gave great pause to my pursuit of science. Science is not something I do not have respect for but it is something that I now understand is merely an attempt to understand God and perfection. Science spends its energy trying to understand how God made all of what we know but fails without faith in God. This is how I see it but only after decades of struggle to put a fine point on this tension between the two. In this I am satisfied and I have the bible to steer me to this conclusion. In essence, science spends its time trying to understand the perfection of God’s universe, laws, and wonders.
